ABSTRACT
Two assays were conducted to study the Tithonia diversifolia (Td) plant: (1) chemical analysis and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of plant parts and (2) productive performance of lambs fed a traditional diet or a Td diet (30% of Td plus 70% of the traditional diet). The plant parts studied were leaves (L), leaves and petioles (LP); and leaves, petioles and stems (LPS). Feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were registered weekly during five weeks of experimentation. The L showed higher (P<0.05) crude protein content (26.7%) than LP and LPS (25.5 and 19.7%, respectively). Crude fiber (11.2%), neutral detergent fiber (45.4%), cellulose (16.9%) and hemicellulose (33.5%) were lower in L than in LP (12.5, 46.7, 18.0 and 35.7%, respectively) and LPS (22.6, 59.2, 27.0 and 43.5%, respectively). The L and LP showed the highest IVDMD (89.2 and 88.2%, respectively vs. 77.2% of LPS). The Td diet resulted in greater feed intake and weight gain and lower feed conversion than the traditional diet. Therefore, Tithonia diversifolia is a forage plant of good quality for lambs which does not affect the productive performance.(AU)
Dois ensaios foram realizados para estudar a planta de Tithonia diversifolia (Td): (1) análise química e digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (DIVMS) de partes de plantas e (2) desempenho produtivo de cordeiros alimentados com dieta tradicional ou dieta Td (30% de Td mais 70% da dieta tradicional). As partes vegetais estudadas foram folhas (L), folhas e pecíolos (LP); folhas, pecíolos e caules (LPS). O consumo de ração, o ganho de peso e a conversão alimentar foram registrados semanalmente, durante cinco semanas de experimentação. O L apresentou maior (P<0,05) conteúdo de proteína bruta (26,7%) que o LP e o LPS (25,5 e 19,7%, respectivamente). Fibra bruta (11,2%), fibra em detergente neutro (45,4%), celulose (16,9%) e hemicelulose (33,5%) foram menores em L do que em LP (12,5, 46,7, 18,0 e 35,7%, respectivamente) e LPS (22,6, 59,2, 27,0 e 43,5%, respectivamente). O L e o LP apresentaram o maior DIVMS (89,2 e 88,2%, respectivamente vs. 77,2% do LPS). A dieta Td resultou em maior consumo de ração e maior ganho de peso e menor conversão alimentar que a dieta tradicional. Portanto, Tithonia diversifolia é uma planta forrageira de boa qualidade para cordeiros que não afeta o desempenho produtivo.(AU)

The microcystic serous cystadenoma of pancreas or glycogen "rich"cystadenoma is a rare entity. Whe studiet five case of this cystadenoma in adult patients ages 47-68 (58 was the mean), four of wich were women (80 percent). The clinical presentation was varied. There was a prevalence of expansive manifestations with epigastric pain in three patients, and extrahepatic bile duct obstruction in other two. A distal tumour was revealed by the diagnostic methodology used (ultrasound and TAC) in three patients, and cephalic tumour in two, with a mean size of 8.8 cm. in diameter. A distal pancreatectomy was performed in two patients, a cephalic pancreatoduodenectomy was performed in one in relation with the presence of extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma, and the other two were treated with a partial cephalic pancreatectomy (enucleation). The nosological diagnose was post-surgical in all case of study. a prognosis for every case was dependat of the associated pathology.

Transgenic mice and rabbits were generated using a chimeric gene comprising the human erythropoietin (hEPO) cDNA under the 5' and 3' regulatory sequences of the rabbit whey acidic protein gene. Transgenic mice expressed hEPO at levels of 0.01 mg/l in the milk of lactating females showing that the genetic construct was functional. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction with RNA from various tissues showed that this transgene was expressed mainly in the ovary and mammary gland. In rabbits, we demonstrated the germ line transmission of the transgene. The hEPO was obtained in the milk of lactating females at levels of up to 0.0003 mg/l. Although the expression levels were low, biologically active hEPO was obtained in the milk of transgenic rabbits without any apparent detrimental effect for the animals. In vitro, the specific activity of the rabbit-derived hEPO was higher than that reported for the natural hEPO, thus suggesting differences in the glycosylation pattern in at least part of the molecules secreted by the mammary gland of transgenic rabbits

Analysis of gene expression in peripheral blood lymphocytes is of special interest because it could reflect physiological conditions. We have examined the expression and compared the relative amounts of specific mRNAs for interferons (IFN-alpha and IFN-beta), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interferon regulatory factors (IRF-1 and IRF-2) from interferon primed and Sendai virus induced peripheral blood leukocytes. Results obtained showed that IRF-1 was highly inducible by IFN treatment, IFN-alpha, TNF-alpha and IRF-2 were weakly induced by IFN treatment, and IFN-beta was not inducible by priming the cells with recombinant human IFN-alpha 2b. The IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, IRF-2 and TNF-alpha transcripts increased upon viral infection. The IRF-1 mRNA was rapidly induced by IFN treatment and decreased after Sendai virus infection. Our results show that, in peripheral blood lymphocytes, IFN-alpha and -beta genes have a different response to IFN induction, thus suggesting different regulatory mechanisms for IFN induction of type I IFN genes in peripheral blood lymphocytes

El virus Vaccinia ha sido empleado como vector para la fabricación de vacunas recombinantes vivas, entre las cuales se ha reportado la fabricación de un virus recombinante capaz de expresar el antígeno de superficie del virus de la hepatitis tipo B (HBSAg) durante el proceso de replicación del virus. En nuestro laboratorio se construyó un virus Vaccinia recombinante, también capaz de expresar el HBSAg. Los transcriptos específicos de HBSAg fueron caracterizados. La propiedad del virus Vaccinia recombinante de expresar el HBSAg, fue probada en ratones y conejos, obteniéndose en estos animales títulos de anticuerpos contra el HBSAg después de haber sido inoculados con los virus recombinantes

Se determinaron los niveles de prolactina circulante en condiciones basales y la respuesta de la misma a estimulacion con tiroliberina, en un grupo de 22 pacientes alcoholicos y un grupo de sujetos sanos con caracteristicas demograficas similares El objetivo fue establecer los efectos del consumo cronico y excesivo de alcohol sobre la secrecion de prolactina por la hipofisis. Los pacientes fueron estudiados tres semana despues de haber cesado su ingestion de alcohol. Los resultados sugieren, que el consumo exagerado de alcohol por si mismo no tiene efectos permanentes en la secrecion de prolactina ni en la respuesta a tiroliberina, aun cuando en algunos pacientes se encontraron valores ligeramente menores que en sus controles.Los autores discuten la importancia que tienen las alteraciones hepaticas de causas diversas en la secrecion de prolactina asi como las diferencias y similitudes de los datos aqui descritos con otros reportados en la literatura

El objetivo es hacer un breve compendio de las metodologias usadas para la pesquisa de casos en tuberculosis, dentro de un programa de control de la endemia y cuales de ellas se aplican en diferentes estados epidemiologicos. Los resultados de los diferentes metodos son observados para nuestro Pais, segun estudios realizados por abreugrafia de masas en forma indiscriminada, abreugrafia sobre grupos considerados de mayor riesgo, bacteriologia sobre grupos seleccionados. Se concluye que es lo aconsejable aplicar segun las regiones; y, especificamente, que es lo indicado para paises de baja prevalencia, entre los que se incluye el nuestro
